AFRO-LUTION
Chicago based visual artist James Nelson’s work focuses on the beauty and value of African American culture. He portrays men and women of color as catalysts of immense beauty through portraiture and figures. He combines gold elements to accentuate the rich tapestry of African culture.
Nelson’s latest body of work, “Afrolution” explores the mystique of rebellion through a revolutionary depiction of African diaspora. This series is influenced by many art movements such as, Art Nouveau, Pop Art, and Hard Edge Abstraction. The Afropunk culture has a major influence on this series. Its influences consist of high energy, eccentric color palettes and patterns. Each composition consists of bold and vibrant geometric shapes, colors, and patterns bringing deep shadows and tones to the figure to capture its true essence.
“Afrolution” is a powerful and liberating movement that proclaims rebellion against societal standards and rejects conformity and embrace the uniqueness and true nature of YOU.
